English 10 Tuesday, August 30

Here's what we did in class today:
Objectives: Why do we need to become better readers and writers?
1- Why Read? Looked at the story of Frederick Douglas, a slave in America's History. Why was it so important that he learn to read and why didn't society want him to learn to read?
2- Went to the library and checked out a book of your choice. You can also bring one from home, but from now on you've got to bring a book to class.
3-Why Write? Watched a video clip from the movie "Finding Forrester."
4- Watched Monster.com's commercial about what you want to be when you grow up. Students brainstormed the various careers they are interested in--  Students then considered how each of those careers involve writing. Students then wrote their goals in to inside folder of their writing portfolio, which they colored and designed for the rest of the period.
Homework: Go home and get online. Search for the origin of your name. What does it mean? Next, ask your parents why they gave you that name? What were you named after or who were you named after? Do you like your name?
*This assignment shouldn’t be more than a paragraph long. It should only take you 15 minutes.
