English 10 Thursday, October 6

Here's what we did in class today:
Objective: How do I use logic to make a better argument?
1. Read the first 15 minutes of class.
2. Looked at the mystery/crime puzzle entitled "Slip or Trip."
3. Analyzed the puzzle by finding evidence, supported by a rule, leading to a conclusion.
Example: Evidence- Arthur still has a glass in his hand. Rule- As a rule, when people fall down the stairs, they usually drop what's in their hand to save their life. Conclusion- Therefore, Queenie is lying about Arthur having a glass in his hands when he fell down the stairs.

Point of the lesson: We want to build logic into our arguments. Unless our evidence is backed up by a generally accepted rule, it will not hold up in an argument. We also don't make big jumps of logic from our evidence/rule to our conclusion.
