Honors 11--Tuesday, December 4

Objective: How does fear affect our actions and choices?

1- Respond to the following bell prompt- if you were absent, make this up in your binder with your other prompts--

"A Man nor a crowd nor a nation can be trusted to act humanely or think sanely under the influence of fear." Bertrand Russell--write what you think this quote means and any real life examples that back up your ideas.

2- As a class, we created a list of how fear affects us-
  • imagination runs wild
  • survival becomes key--people get selfish
  • unable to see logic
  • chaotic
  • Let go of beliefs
  • Do things you didn't think you'd do
  • let go of social norms
  • Get away as quickly as possible
  • Become frozen/shocked
3- Watched clips from the TV show "Scare Tactics" to analyze real people in scary situations. Compare their actions to the list on the overhead.

4- Discussed how fear is prevalent in "The Lord of the Flies" Students answered the following question in a strong paragraph--
"How does Jack use fear to his advantage?"

Homework: Continue reading the rest of the novel. Section 3 questions are due Wednesday 12/12
