Honors 11- Tuesday, November 29

Objective: What are soapsTONEs and how do I use them to write a speech?
1- Take Notes on SoapsTONEs-
  • Speaker- who are you? What details do you reveal about yourself?
  • Occasion- what's going on to prompt this speech--what is the speech in response to?
  • Audience- characteristics of the group you are addressing? How can you relate to them? Why are you addressing them? Who is your primary audience--who are you actually addressing? Who else do you know is listening?
  • Purpose- What are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to persuade, inform, motivate?
  • Subject- What are you talking about?
  • Tone- What do you want your audience to feel? Choose appropriate words and phrases to enhance tone.
  • Scope- what do you include AND WHAT DO YOU EXCLUDE FROM YOUR SPEECH? How focused on your subject are you? Should be narrow.
2- We read Queen Elizabeth's speech after Diana died and practiced as a class.
3-Students read JK Rowling's Harvard Commencement Speech in groups and then completed soapstones. This is worth 10 points and must be made up. For speech, click on link below:
